Rick Williams, DC BLOX Makes Prediction For Next 12 Months: “I Think You’ll See Several Carriers Start to Concentrate on Southeast”

NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — Any burgeoning data center market has to have the potential for a highly connected core, and the Carolinas are no different. At CapRE’s 2018 Southeast Data Center Summit Spring Update, we concluded the summit with a panel discussion titled Connectivity Innovations & Edge Data Center Growth in Carolina Markets: Analysis of the Advent of 5G, Dark Fiber Installation and Evolution of the Next Generation, which included a brief Q&A with Rick Williams, the Head of Strategic Business Development for DC BLOX. Below, Founder & CEO of CapRE Brian Klebash asked each panelist about their expectations for the next year.
Klebash: What do you think will be the most challenging aspect of this market in the next year?
Brechtel: My viewpoint is because we are software-defined networking. We’re a software service that controls a global hardware infrastructure, network infrastructure. So you know, for us to basically turn a data center into a virtual public Cloud hotel is a 5 kilowatt rack, unlimited redundant power, out-of-band management, and diverse fiber optic carriers into the data center. If we can do that, you’re off to the races from a public Cloud perspective, as well as network as a service across all of our imports.
If that data center operator can give us that, we can turn that into a virtual public Cloud hotel. And give them access to any of those hyperscalers. And where I’m going here is the Hybrid Cloud. 73% today are going to the Hybrid Cloud. I don’t see it as being challenging. Again, we’re trying to wait and see where DC BLOX goes, where Flexential goes, and where some of these other data center operators go. Because we want to deploy there. and the hyperscalers want us to deploy there because it takes them years to put a cloud on-ramp somewhere. If they put a MegaPort in that data center, then there’s that cloud on-ramp right there. We’re API-integrated. We’ve got 100 of them globally. so I’d really like to see us do something here, in South Carolina. Maybe it’s Volvo. Maybe it’s BMW. Maybe its autonomous vehicles or something that’s going to drive that. But from our perspective, we don’t see it as a challenge.
Klebash: Rick, what are you most excited about for the next 12 months?
Williams: Mobile network operators and their 5G deployments, and their C-RAN deployments. These are a huge opportunity. Autonomous cars as a huge opportunity, but I think that’s more longer term. I think that you’ll see several carriers start to concentrate on the Southeast, where they haven’t before. As a result of more of the business starting to come here. Whether it be Nashville, which is growing at a record pace, or Raleigh or Charlotte, which have been growing at a record pace for the last 15 years, at some point, those migration patterns start to take a toll on the networks.
And that means that they have to do something about it, and that means deploying in markets that they’re not perfect for today. So I think that’s the immediate opportunity. And then I’ll add to that, where content meets eyeballs.
