Henry Amistadi, IT and Data Center Analyst, MITRE
He has many years’ experience working both sides of enterprise data centers, as an IT performance analyst and a data center HVAC/Facilities analyst.
IT Performance Analyst – MITRE
As a performance analyst and tester for +10 years, he tested or analyzed the performance of every kind of hardware (storage, network appliances) and software (COT, ERP and custom). He performed many application usage and VM performance analyzes. His application workloads collection is used when estimating the cost of moving apps to the cloud. He was involved in virtualization of many Enterprise apps. As BCP/DR tests analyst he determined timings for infrastructure reboots, mirroring and application availability.
HVAC/Energy software developer – Prior to MITRE
Prior to MITRE, he had +15 year’s experience designing and developing building HVAC design and energy software for Mechanical Engineers, Utility companies, HVAC manufacturers. He was an active member of ASHRAE Energy Calculation Technical Committee.
Data Center Analyst – MITRE
Because of his prior experience, in 2011 he was assigned to work on data center consolidation and modernization. Virtualization left a patchwork of server to consolidate, and racks with high power draw. He facilitated “low hanging fruit” retrofits and quantified their impact, but couldn’t substantially increase cooling capacity to racks. This lead to the need for modernization.
As the power & cooling systems technical lead on the data center modernization project, he worked with Facilities, IT operations and BusOps. He modeled all the water and refrigerant cooling system options including CRACs, in-row, and cabinet cooling calculating initial and operating costs. His recommendation was to install an active rear door refrigerant-based cooling system (Opticool) that utilized campus chilled water, and 408 V power distribution to support high power rows. To obtain funding from the CIO required a “build it as you need it approach” to be economically competitive with CoLo. The phased implementation was modeled using CFD. Once installed, the system won innovation awards, and was presented at Gartner and other conferences.
Since the system was innovation (1st Opticool install in New England), it required extensive monitoring and tuning. As a data analyst, he used Tableau to build a Data Center Analyst Workbench for visualizing the IT rack temperature, humidity, power; and HVAC system performance. This system is currently used for trending, capacity planning & problem diagnostics. His recent research project focused on use of machine learning for anomaly detection and predictive maintenance using Splunk.
He has work on data center studies for other MITRE Centers’ sponsors including Air Force & DOD.
